Witches are the followers of a neo-pagan religion of Wicca, and they follow their customs and rituals just like is done in any other religion. Every religion has its own sacred set of ritualistic tools and symbols, and Wicca is no exception to this. They have their consistent sacred tools that are used to perform and enhance their ritual worship.
The most known and common witches’ tools are the dagger, known as Athame, a cauldron, and the wand to name a few. Most of us have always associated every one of these tools with evil practices and black magic and the notion that they are used for performing sinful and scary rituals at their ceremonies. But, the truth is that these tools are simply used to aid in the ritualistic processes and help the witches build their concentration and psychic power. Every witch generally has her own personal tools, and the only one that is shared by a coven of witches would be the Athame (dagger). The witchcraft tools are very personal to every witch and symbolize the individual’s witch-hood. Witches adopt tools that they feel a connection to or which they feel is right for them.
The Athame is a very sacred tool for the witches and is not supposed to be used without first consulting the owner witch. Traditionally, the Athame is made of a black handle and a steel blade, but this varies as per the witch’s choice and can be decorated as per the individual. And contrary to the belief, the Athame is not used for conducting human or animal sacrifice. It is purely symbolic and traditional.
A wand is perhaps the most popular and fantasized witchcraft tool of all. The wand can be made of different types of wood as per the concerned witch’s personal choice. The wand is meant for evoking and harnessing the spell’s energies and directing this energy towards a target. There is no set length for a wand. And no, a wand does not have lights and sparks flying out of it at the chant of a spell.
When we think of a witch’s cauldron, we always imagine something ghastly and gory brewing within it, like bats’ juice or octopus’s tentacles. But, the truth is, witches require a cauldron to contain water, incenses and is considered to symbolize renewal.
Witches normally make use of a pentacle that shows a pentagram and is generally made of copper or wood. It is kept as a center piece at the altar and is implemented for consecrating the different objects. A chalice also is one of the most sacred tools in witchcraft that is meant to hold the wine after it has been consecrated. And no, it does not hold blood.
The Book of Shadows stirs within us some deep mystery as we assume it to contain some vicious and powerful spells. But, let us get it clear; that every witch keeps a Book of Shadows recording spells, incantations, rituals, and also his or her own personal experiences and development on the journey as a witch towards spiritual enlightenment.
Remember, these “magical tools” are not the whole and sole of a witch’s practice. They can well do without these tools. If they do not have the wand, they use their hands; if they do not have the traditional cauldron, they use some other vessel or a beaker to hold the contents. It is that simple. There are no such doctrines stating that these tools have to be used for performing rituals. The witches’ tools hold great traditional and sacred significance just like different apparatus and symbols hold great holy significance in other religions.
