WHAT IS MAGIC

The question ‘what is magic’ needs a clear explanation, as the concept of magic means different things to different people. For those who believe in supernatural powers, magic entails the manoeuvring of people, objects and events by utilising the “supernatural powers” so that the coveted outcome is generated. Here, magic is inclusive of different tools in addition to charms, spells and rituals. These tools are found to be helpful in changing the environment in which the practitioner performs these tasks. However, majority of people find magic fascinating and there are people who are extreme interested in magic and are eager to know “what is magic”.

The origin of magic can be traced back to ancient times, and it is found that several cultures had utilised the services of wizards, witches, sorcerers, warlocks, shamans and witch doctors who utilised supernatural powers, in order to perform various tasks. The popularity of magic depends on the particular religion. There are religions in which magic is incorporated deeply. However, other religions refuse to accept magic since they associate magic with the devil.

An important thing to be mentioned regarding magic is that, most people believe that for practising magic one needs to be able to utilise supernatural or magical powers. This is because with the use of these powers they can communicate with inanimate objects and spirits. The concept of magic is different in different cultures and the beliefs also vary. The distinction between different types such as black magic or white magic is also varied in different cultures. Generally, black magic is associated with negativity whereas white magic is considered to be used for good purposes.

People who learned and understood the history and evolution of magic have indicated the use of magic by practitioners for different purposes such as bad spells removal, health care, changing the weather so that crops can be benefited etc. They were performed in a particular way which also depended on the culture. During those times, people practising magic where held in high esteem. The question “what is magic” was relevant during that time as well.

However, there have been instances when people were scared of those who performed magic. If you go through history, you will come across several incidents in which practitioners and witches were tortured and punished and were forced to admit that they utilized powerful forces to bring about ills and other bad things.

Magic and spell casters have been present in the world since time immorable. With the passing of time, their presence increased and today, they can be seen in a large number of regions all over the world. Some of these practitioners dedicate their life for communities and tribes and their well-being. Some of these practitioners incorporate the magic and magical powers into their faith. An example of this would be the Wiccans. They perform magic through medication, rituals, spells, creating magical objects, charms, etc besides several other tools.

Skilled magicians have always been popular among people with their ability to demonstrate unbelievable things such as blooming flowers in middle air, cutting women into half, making flowers appear out of nowhere, escaping from tightly closed tanks in which they have been tied by using strong chains, conjuring rabbits from hats all of a sudden etc besides various others. They always experiment with their magic and try to come up with new techniques like the ones mentioned above. For performing these types of rituals there is no need to connect with supernatural powers. Instead, they can become successful through focused and concentrated work and several years of experience.
