Wiccans composed a book filled with core rituals, religious and magical texts, their philosophy and ethics, their spells, incantations, chants, divination methods and much more and they called this as the “Book of Shadows”. The Wiccan religion is composed of various lineaged traditional forms and even the Book of Shadows has several versions. Gerald Gardener, who is fondly remembered as the “father of Wicca”, was the first to introduce this book to the world. He claimed the Book of Shadows to be a personal book of spells. He claimed that as per tradition, the Book of Shadows was burned after the owner died so that the fact that he or she was a witch could never be revealed.
The Book of Shadows is nothing like a Bible or a Quran. In fact it varies with every Wiccan. But, it is totally up to the Wiccan to open and share his or her book with other witches, but more often than not, every Wiccan keeps this journal purely to himself. Composing one is not written as a kind of validity or proof of your Wiccan beliefs and religion. It is practically for your guidance which you can refer to and review in the future.
